Director of Nursing – Direct Observation Unit (DOU)
Greater Los Angeles Area, California
Compensation: $150,000 – $190,000 | Full-Time | Exempt
The Opportunity
Our client is seeking an experienced Director of Nursing for a Direct Observation Unit (DOU) at a well-established acute care hospital in the Greater Los Angeles area. This is a full-time leadership opportunity for a clinically strong, operationally experienced RN leader ready to assume 24-hour administrative and clinical responsibility for a high-acuity step-down environment.
The DOU provides the second-highest level of inpatient care, bridging the gap between the ICU and medical-surgical floors. This role is a strong fit for a nurse leader who brings hands-on telemetry and progressive care experience, sound judgment under pressure, and a track record of building engaged, high-performing teams.

Required Experience
Qualified candidates should have:
• Minimum of two years of nursing experience in a specialty area (telemetry, step-down, progressive care, or DOU strongly preferred)
• Prior supervisory or nursing leadership experience preferred
• Demonstrated ability to manage telemetry-monitored patients and interpret cardiac rhythms
• Strong customer service skills and a patient- and family-centered approach to care
• A history of dependable performance and collaborative working relationships with physicians and multidisciplinary teams
Required Qualifications
Candidates must hold:
• BS or BSN (preferred)
• Current and valid California RN license
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications
• Specialty certification preferred (CCRN, PCCN, MICN, or Med/Surg certification)
• Completion of annual 6-hour stroke education (required for those in applicable facilities)
Key Responsibilities
In this role, the Director of Nursing – DOU will be responsible for:
• Assuming 24-hour administrative and clinical accountability for the Direct Observation Unit
• Supervising and coordinating a multidisciplinary team including nurses, monitor technicians, and allied health staff
• Managing unit scheduling, staff assignments, and the performance appraisal process
• Ensuring staff adherence to approved Standards of Practice and unit-specific standards of care
• Overseeing telemetry monitoring, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and step-down/progressive care protocols
• Coordinating care for post-surgical, trauma, stroke, and medically complex patients
• Ensuring compliance with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Title 22 standards
• Facilitating quality outcomes through planning, organizing, directing, delegating, and evaluating unit operations
• Promoting cooperative working relationships with physicians, specialists, and other care providers
• Providing direct patient care as needed and serving as a clinical role model for unit staff
